Born in New York in 1961, memoirist, Kathleen Belfiore Schuman, moved to Florida in 1976 with her parents and for the last decade plus, has resided in a small town in northeast Tennessee with her husband, Ed, who she met and married in 1994.

In 1997, she began her lifelong passion to document her family roots, extending her research to Ed's family. In the end, she unraveled a mystery that unexpectedly came together because of her drive and perseverance. 

In 2005, with family pictures and documents from the Schuman family scrapbooks, Kathleen put her husband's genealogy research together in a self-published book for the family titled, Whispers from an Empty Coffin.

Over the years, Kathleen Belfiore Schuman expanded that story with help from the National Archives and Records Administration, resulting in this published memoir, Chasing His Purple Heart.
